Up goes the cost of making corsets

Mon May 4, 2009, 11:22 AM
I recently found a coutil supplier that was selling cotton coutil for half the cost I usually pay. Hurrah! Brilliant! That means I can pass those savings onto my lovely clients. But alas, my dear Watson, Busks have gone up in price, grommets have gone up in price, and one of my silk suppliers has gone up in price.

Annoying, isn't it?

Hopefully having a photoshoot with :iconeclipse-of-faith: at the end of May, and I had every intention of making 9 whole new corsets for it. 9 new corsets and two wedding gowns. But oh no. Due to having money stolen from my account, I had to put a lot of postage costs (which have also gone up-by the way) on my credit card. Which has subsequently gone over it's limit and now I have to pay charges on that too.

I am not a happy bunny on the money front. As fast as it comes in these days, it seems to still be going out at the same rate.

The only way to fix this is to triple my prices. Which I don't want to do.

Oh no! Prices go up everywhere it seems... well, it's good that you found a coutil supplier that offers better prices, but still... I hope your money gets back to you as soon as possible, because it's a crime to stop creativity like yours. I absolutely loved your last wedding gown, the corset is adorable and, even though I'm not a "I-wanna-get-married" girl, I would love to wear that kind of gown to my wedding! My boyfriend would just die from a heart attack :P

All this to say, I love your work, and I wish you the best of luck, and I also wish I was able to retrieve the thief and make him pay you what he owes you adding the interest rate :D I am still cheering you even though you can't hear me! Let's go! You can do it! Keep up the good work!

I just put a 'small order' for components, only one busk, a few laces a couple of hundred or so eyelets and a few bones and it's come to almost £90! I hope the pound recovers soon, I'm fed up of it being so low against the euro. Looks like I'm going to have to revise my prices too...

Eyelets are killing me at the mo.Buying them and my busks from sewingchest because they are still slightly cheaper than VC.

Really stressful though on the cost side of things. With corsets being such a luxury item and the economy the way it is. In other news though, I have a couple more gown commissions booked in for next year. Just looking to get some in for this year now.

I'm afraid I'm old fashioned and a great believer in customer loyalty, so I get what's available from my wholesalers in Bradford and the rest I get from VC. I've been using them for so long we exchange personal emails and I've even been invited to a party in the past, which sadly I couldn't go to. It's a bit harder to switch your loyalty when you've met someone - sewing chest is still faceless whereas I know the Vena Cava people having met them at Whitby a few years ago.

Good to hear about the gown commissions - how's the 1 corset a day thing going? I've just made a couple and I have another five to do but I'm waiting on a delivery of components and fashion fabric. I thought they might arrive this morning but the post box is empty - maybe Monday... So I have enforced rest from sewing for a couple of days - just as well, I think every pot in the house needs washing up - I've been busy and no-one else has thought to do any washing up! Talking of which :sprint:
